How To Understand Your Skin Needs
Updated: Mar 9
Your skin reflects origin, lifestyle, age and state of health.
Your daily skincare routine plays a major role in Your lives and your skin health influencing your body image and self-confidence.
Understanding your skin functions, type and needs will help you to make wise decisions when you choose a skincare products for your daily care routine.
What are the main functions of our skin?
Your skin is the largest active organ of your body and it has multiple roles and functions.
The most important function which your skin has is as a barrier, to protect the body from noxious external factors by keeping the internal systems intact.
Do skincare products penetrate into the skin?
There are many internet myths about our skin and skincare products such as:
“60% of everything you apply to your skin ends up in your bloodstream”
“It takes only 26 seconds for a cosmetic ingredient to reach your bloodstream”
“The average woman absorbs 4lbs 6oz of cosmetics into her body each year.”
These statements are somewhat untrue. However, skin care products do penetrate the skin and it is different for everyone, as it depends on a range of different factors, including:
Health of skin
Gender (men’s skin is thicker)
Warmth of the skin
Dose of product applied
Duration of contact with the skin (leave-on vs. rinse-off)
Physio-biochemical properties of an individual’s skin.
Lots of studies have shown that Carrier Oils such as almond oil and soybean oil can make it to the third layer of the skin; the other oils either sat on the skin’s surface or only made it to the first two layers of cells.
Essential oils on the other hand, not only can penetrate into the skin and deep into the dermis but can making it into the bloodstream.
For this reason, essential oils are not to be applied directly onto the skin as they can be dangerous to our health.
Essential oils must only be used in conjunction with Carrier Oils or mixed into your non-fragrant moisturizer when applied onto the skin.
How can I choose the right skincare products for my skin needs?
With increasing age, the emphasis on skin care is changing.
The cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry offers a vast range of skin care products and procedures to clean, soothe, restore, reinforce, protect and to treat your skin.
